What if you pulled every supplement out of your cabinet today and had to explain exactly why each one was there?
For a lot of women, that question gets uncomfortable fast. Supplements accumulate one bottle at a time: a recommendation from a friend, something you heard on a podcast, a product you started for a symptom two years ago, or something you bought because you were desperate to feel better. Eventually, the original plan disappears and the bottles stay.
In the final episode of The Supplement Playbook, I walk you through my 15-Minute Supplement Audit: a simple system for figuring out what you are taking, why you are taking it, what it is supposed to support, and whether it is actually doing its job.
This is not about throwing everything away or buying something new. It is about moving from guessing to knowing - and building a supplement strategy around your symptoms, history, lifestyle, medications, and labs.
Most women do not need more bottles. They need more clarity. Every supplement deserves a job - and every supplement deserves a performance review.
Okay. I want to tell you about the day Sarah walked into my office with a grocery bag.
Not a small bag. A full, heavy, handles-straining grocery bag.
And she sets it down on the table between us, and she starts pulling out supplement bottles one by one.
Fish oil. Magnesium. Berberine. A probiotic. Collagen. Vitamin D. Adrenal support. Ashwagandha. A greens powder. A hormone support formula. A liver detox supplement. A sleep blend.
Twenty-eight bottles total.
And I let her finish. And then I pick one up and I ask her the most basic question I know.
"Sarah... why are you taking this one?"
She looks at the bottle. Pauses.
"I don't really know."
So I pick up another one.
"What about this one?"
"My friend recommended it."
Another one.
"When did you start this?"
"I honestly can't remember."
Another one.
"Do you think it's helping?"
"I have no idea."
And here's what I want you to hear — Sarah is not unusual. I see this all the time. Smart, motivated, genuinely health-conscious women who have been doing their best with the information they had. Following podcasts. Reading articles. Trusting recommendations. Trying things. Buying more things.
And somewhere along the way, the plan got lost. The bottles kept accumulating. The original reason for starting something got forgotten. And nobody ever stopped to ask: does this still deserve a place in my routine?
The problem isn't that Sarah bought the wrong brands.
The problem is that Sarah doesn't have a system.
And that's exactly what we're going to build today.
Now, when most people hear the word "audit," they brace themselves. It sounds like taxes. Or a performance review. Or something you have to survive.
That's not what I mean at all.
The 15-Minute Supplement Audit is simply a way to step back and ask one honest question: does my current supplement routine still make sense for the person I am today?
Because here's how most people end up with twenty-eight bottles on the table.
It happens one bottle at a time. One recommendation from a friend. One podcast. One social media post. One health scare. One late-night purchase because you were desperate to feel better.
And after a few years, you open the cabinet and realize you have no idea what's essential and what's just taking up space.
So let's change that.
The 15-Minute Supplement Audit has two layers — and I want to walk you through both of them today, because they work together.
The first layer is what I call the Four Questions. These are the foundation. They're fast, they're clarifying, and they will completely change how you think about every single bottle in your cabinet.
The second layer is the full Audit itself — a simple tracking system where you record everything in one place. Not just the four questions, but the actual details: the product name, the brand, your dose, your frequency, your timing, who recommended it, and whether it's helping.
And here's something I want to say before we dive in — this audit works just as well for medications as it does for supplements. If you're managing multiple prescriptions alongside your supplements, this is the place to capture all of it. Because your medications and your supplements are not separate conversations. They're part of the same picture.
Let's start with the Four Questions.
This sounds almost too simple. But I promise you it's not.
I can't count how many times someone sits down in my office and tells me they're "only taking a few things." And then we start pulling bottles out. The multivitamin. The fish oil. The magnesium. The collagen powder in the pantry. The probiotic in the fridge. The vitamin D on the kitchen counter. The sleep gummy on the nightstand. The adrenal support they forgot they were even taking.
And suddenly those "few things" are fifteen supplements.
Sometimes awareness alone is the most powerful thing.
You can't organize what you haven't acknowledged. So the very first step is simple: pull everything out. Put it all on the kitchen table. No guilt. No judgment. Just honesty.
This is the most important mindset shift in this entire series.
Every supplement deserves a job.
If I pick up one of your bottles and ask why you're taking it, I want a real answer. Not "my friend takes it." Not "it was on sale." Not "I heard about it on TikTok."
I want something like: "My ferritin was low." "My practitioner recommended it while we work on my gut." "I'm going through an incredibly stressful season and we added this for nervous system support."
That's a supplement with a purpose. That's a supplement with a job.
The highest-quality supplement in the world is still the wrong supplement if your body doesn't actually need it.
This is where functional medicine gets beautiful — because we're not just chasing lab numbers. We're connecting science back to your actual life.
Maybe your ferritin is low. But you don't care about ferritin. You care that you're exhausted. You care that your hair is falling out. You care that you can't make it through the afternoon without another cup of coffee.
Maybe your Omega-3 Index is low. But what you're really hoping for is less joint pain. Fewer dry eyes. Better cardiovascular health.
This question takes the data and connects it to what you're actually living. Because supplements should support health concerns — not just lab values.
This is the question almost nobody asks.
They start a supplement. Weeks go by. Months go by. Sometimes years go by. And nobody ever stops to ask: did this actually help?
Maybe it did. Maybe you sleep through the night now. Maybe your headaches are gone. Maybe your digestion is calmer. Maybe your anxiety feels quieter. Maybe you genuinely forgot you even had that problem.
Those quiet victories matter. But if you never stop to look back, you'll never realize how far you've come. Our memories are surprisingly unreliable — we adapt to feeling better just as quickly as we adapt to feeling worse.
And maybe something else happened. Maybe nothing changed at all. Maybe you felt worse. Maybe you developed nausea, or bloating, or a new kind of fatigue.
Remember what we talked about in Episode Two — a response isn't failure. A response is information. And information helps us make better decisions.
Now that you have the Four Questions, let's talk about the full Audit — because this is where it really comes together.
The 15-Minute Supplement Audit worksheet is what I want you to actually download and use. It's a simple tracking tool, but it captures everything that matters.
For each product — supplement or medication — you're recording:
The name of the product. The brand. Why you're taking it. Your dose — how many capsules or how much. Your frequency — once a day, twice a day, three times a day. Your timing — with meals, on an empty stomach, morning, evening. Who recommended it. And whether it's helping — yes, no, or unsure.
That last column might be the most important one of all. Because "unsure" isn't a failure — "unsure" is your most important data point. It's a flag telling you this product deserves another look.
Now here's what I love about this system. When you lay it all out in one place, patterns appear that you couldn't see when the bottles were scattered across three different rooms of your house.
Maybe you have five products that all do essentially the same thing — and you didn't realize it because they came from different practitioners at different times.
Maybe there's a product you've been taking for two years that was originally started for a problem that resolved eighteen months ago.
Maybe you're spending hundreds of dollars a month on supplements and you can't clearly say that any of them are helping.
That's not a failure. That's exactly what the audit is designed to surface.
And this is where I want to bring in something I mentioned in Episode Two — because it connects directly here.
Some of the supplements in your audit may be there specifically because of what your medications are taking from you. If you're on a blood pressure medication, an antidepressant, birth control, acid blockers, or a statin — those medications have known nutrient depletions. And the supplements supporting those gaps deserve their own clear row in your audit. That's not random supplementation. That has a specific, documented job.
Let me walk you through the audit the way I'd walk through it with Sarah.
She picks up her magnesium glycinate.
Product name: Magnesium Glycinate. Brand: whatever she's using. Why taking it: her practitioner recommended it because she was waking up three to four times a night. Dose: two capsules. Frequency: once daily. Timing: with dinner. Who recommended it: her practitioner. Is it helping: yes.
Her neck and shoulders are less tense. She's waking up less. She feels calmer during the day. That's a supplement doing its job. It stays.
She picks up her fish oil.
Why: her Omega-3 Index was low. Health concern: joint stiffness and dry eyes. Is it helping: yes — her knees don't ache as much when she gets out of bed, and her eyes are less dry by end of day. It stays.
Then she picks up the adrenal support formula.
Why am I taking this? Pause. "I don't really remember." Is it helping? "I honestly don't know."
And I want you to hear me when I say this — that is not a bad outcome. That is the audit working exactly as it's supposed to. Because now we know this product needs a conversation. Maybe there's still a reason for it. Maybe there isn't. But "I don't know" is no longer acceptable information when you're investing your health and your money into something every single day.
That's the shift. From collecting to strategizing. From hoping to knowing.
Before we zoom out to the bigger picture, I want to give you something practical to actually use while you're standing in front of your cabinet.
As I've worked through this audit with patients over and over, I've noticed the same handful of patterns come up again and again. I call these the red flags worth a second look. And I want to say this clearly, right up front — if you read through these and find yourself nodding at one, two, or even five of them, that is not a failure. That's not something to feel bad about. That is exactly what this audit is for.
Here they are.
Now, once you've gone through your cabinet with these eight in mind, there's one last step I want you to add to your audit. Schedule your next one. Pick a date for your next audit. Write down when your labs are due to be retested. And jot down which specific products you want to revisit at that time.
Because here's something I learned a long time ago, watching weather systems move across the plains. Conditions change. What was true about the atmosphere yesterday isn't necessarily true today. And your body works the same way. The plan that was right for you a year ago might need an update today. That's not failure either. That's just life — and it's exactly why we build the next audit in from the very beginning.
As we wrap up this series, I want to leave you with something bigger than the audit.
Back in my storm chasing days, one of the things I learned early on is that you never make a call based on incomplete data. You don't look at one instrument, one radar return, one surface observation and declare a verdict. You gather everything. You look at the full picture. And then you make an informed decision.
Your health is the same.
The 15-Minute Supplement Audit is a powerful tool — but it's one piece of a larger picture. The patients I work with who make the most meaningful, lasting progress are the ones who bring all of it together.
Your symptoms are the first layer. Fatigue. Brain fog. Hair loss. Poor sleep. Anxiety that came out of nowhere. Bloating. Joint pain. Low libido. These are clues. They tell me where to look.
Your health history is the second layer. Have you had your gallbladder removed? Been on acid-blocking medications long term? Do you have Hashimoto's? A history of chronic antibiotics? Are you in perimenopause? These aren't random questions. They change everything about what your body needs right now.
Your lifestyle is the third layer. Sleep, stress, food, movement — because sometimes the answer isn't another supplement. Sometimes it's fixing the foundation first.
And then the labs. This is where we stop guessing.
Ferritin — your iron storage — is one of the most commonly missed causes of fatigue and hair loss in women. It can be tanked even when your standard iron panel looks fine. Vitamin D. Omega-3 Index. Homocysteine. Thyroid markers beyond just TSH. Blood sugar regulation. DUTCH hormone testing. Comprehensive stool analysis when digestion is struggling.
These aren't just numbers. They're the rest of the forecast.
And when you combine your audit — what you're taking, why, and whether it's working — with your symptoms, your history, and your labs? That's when we stop making educated guesses and start building a plan that's actually designed for you.
Not for your friend. Not for the woman in the Facebook group. Not for the person who swears by a product in the podcast comments.
For you.
So here's what I want you to do when this episode ends.
Go to your supplement cabinet. Pull everything out — supplements and medications. Download the 15-Minute Supplement Audit. And start going through it one product at a time.
What is it? Why am I taking it? What's it supposed to be doing? Is it actually helping?
You don't have to figure everything out today. You don't have to throw everything away. You don't have to buy anything new.
Just start paying attention.
Because I think you'll be surprised by what you discover.
Some supplements are going to have clear, meaningful jobs and clear, meaningful results. Keep those — they've earned their place.
Some are going to make you say "I honestly don't know." Those deserve a second look.
And some are going to make you say "I have no idea why I'm still taking this." And that's not a failure. That's the audit doing exactly what it's supposed to do.
This three-part series has been about one thing, at its core.
Moving from guessing to knowing.
Episode One was about choosing supplements wisely — quality, bioavailability, the five questions.
Episode Two was about using them wisely — dosing, timing, the Goldilocks Zone, and what your medications may be taking from you.
And today is about organizing them into a strategy. A strategy built around your body, your concerns, your history, and your data.
Every supplement deserves a job. And every supplement deserves a performance review. Clarity over more bottles — that's really the whole idea of this audit.
And if there's one line I want you to carry with you from all three episodes, it's this: your friend is not your lab result.
Because most women don't need more supplements.
They need more clarity.
They need a system.
They need a plan that's actually theirs.
